Communications 12 Self Paced Course Outline

Welcome to Communications 12. 
This is the self-paced version of Communications 12.
(There is also a class available which you can join throughout the year. Please talk to a teacher if you are interested in a class.)

Prerequisite:  Pass the Pre-Credit Course Assessment or English 10
Materials:
1.    The following books are rented:
a) Evergreen: A Guide to Writing
b) A novel (which you will get later)

2.    There are 10 units in Communications 12. Self-paced students get their assignments from the PALC website: (www.newwestadultlearning.ca) Choose "Adult Learning Centre site" (on the left side of the page); Choose “Courses”; “English”; “Communications 12 Self-Paced”.

3.    Short stories, some poems, and letter writing are found on the computers in the Computer Lab not on the web. Ask your teacher for help.

4.    You will provide a binder and paper.  All assignments should be kept in a neat and orderly fashion to receive credit for completion of the course.

5.    Page numbers are given for all editions of Evergreen: A Guide to Writing.  Do only the assignments for the edition that you have rented.

*Completion of Compositions (Out-of-Class)            15%
*Completion of Compositions (In-Class-tests)          50%

Unit 1

Communications 12 Unit 1:

1.    Introduction to the short story: Print the Introduction to the Short Story, read it carefully and make notes on the main ideas. 
2.    Character: Print Character, read it carefully and make notes on the main ideas.
3.    Vocabulary: Print Charles Vocabulary Part 1 and complete the exercise.
4.    Charles: Print out the Active Reader’s Marks handout and the short story Charles. (available in the lab only) Practice using the active reader marks as you read the story.


5.    Vocabulary: Print Charles Vocabulary Part 2 and complete the exercise.
6.    Charles: Answer Questions #1-4 at the end of the story. Please follow these guidelines for your answers:
a.  Write your answers in complete sentences including the question in the answer.
b.  Provide support for your answers from the story. Put the page number of the story where you found the support. You can quote from the story or explain in your own words. If you use a quotation from the story, use only the part that supports answer. Do not use a long quotation.
c.   You will be marked for content and grammar.
d.  Hand in these questions to a teacher.
e.  Write on your assignment:
                        i.   Your full name
                       ii.   Your student number
                      iii.   The date
                      iv.   The name of the assignment.

11. Write a Paragraph-In-Class and Do a Reading Test: Evergreen: Chapter 3
When you have received a final mark for your paragraph from Practice 13 and you have reviewed this chapter, ask a teacher for the
Chapter 3- Paragraph and Reading Test. You will write this assignment under test conditions. You may not use a dictionary. Allow 90 minutes.

        Complete the following. Strive to make your sentences interesting.
      a) Write one simple sentence. Label the subject and the verb.
      b) Write a simple sentence with two prepositional phrases.

      e) Write a simple sentence with a helping verb.
      **Proofread your work carefully before handing it in.

Hand in Grammar 1-1 to receive a mark.

13. Grammar #1.2 Complete the following and hand it in when you are finished.
Use your Evergreen  as a reference - DO NOT do the exercises in the text!!!

2. Write a sentence using the coordinating conjunction “but” and the word “renounce” from Charles.

4. Write a sentence using the subordinating conjunction “because” and the word “raucous” or “raucously.”
5. Write a sentence using the subordinating conjunction “before” and the word “passionate.”

Hand in Grammar 1-2 for a mark.

Communications 12 Unit 2:

1.    Setting: Print the selection, Setting, read it carefully and make notes on the main ideas.
2.    Vocabulary: Print Antaeus Vocabulary Part 1 and complete the exercise.


3.    Antaeus: Print out and read Antaeus. (Available in the lab only) Practice using the active reader marks as you read the story. You may view a movie clip of the short story.

4.    Vocabulary: Print Antaeus Vocabulary Part 2 and complete the exercise.
5.    Antaeus: Answer Questions #1-5 at the end of the story. Remember to follow these guidelines for your answers:
a.    Write your answers in complete sentences including the question in the answer.

9.    Novel Paper 1 
You will read a novel throughout the course and do five assignments as you read. Print Novel Paper 1 and complete the assignment. Your teacher will suggest a novel or you could bring a novel you would like to read. A teacher must approve your novel if you bring in your own.
Hand in Paper 1. Continue reading your novel.

10. Grammar #2-1 Complete the following and hand it in when you are finished. DO NOT do the exercises in the text!!!
Evergreen Writing book reference: Chapter 26 and 27.

Please correct the following sentences; you may add or subtract words.
1.    Although some students came late.
2.    Who studies English everyday.
3.    Drinking a coffee before breakfast.
4.    John and he goes to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
5.   Neither of the students have passed the test yet.

Hand in Grammar 2-1 to receive a mark.


11.  Grammar #2-2 Complete the following and hand it in when you are finished.      Use your Evergreen Writing book for a reference-Chapter 27.

  1. Write a sentence using “each of.”
